Plate Heat Exchangers For Data Center Cooling: Liquid Loops And Free Cooling

Knowledge base

As servers grow denser, more data centers cool them with liquid rather than with air alone, and the plate heat exchanger has become one of the quiet key parts of the cooling plant. It separates the clean liquid that reaches the servers from the larger water system of the building, it lets cool outdoor air do the work when the weather allows, and it can pass the waste heat on to someone who wants it. This guide explains where the exchanger sits and why it is there.

Two Circuits That Must Not Meet

A liquid-cooled data center has two kinds of water. The facility circuit is the building's own system: long pipes, chillers, cooling towers or dry coolers, many materials and a water quality that is good but not perfect. The technology circuit runs to the racks and through the cold plates on the processors, with passages so fine that any dirt or corrosion product would block them. A plate heat exchanger, often inside a coolant distribution unit, lets the heat cross from one circuit to the other while the liquids stay apart, so the servers only ever see their own clean, treated coolant.

Why A Plate Exchanger

Space in a data hall is valuable, and a plate exchanger does the job in a small footprint. It can bring the two circuits close in temperature, which lets the facility water run warmer and saves chiller energy. It reacts quickly when the IT load changes, and it keeps the volume of the technology circuit small, which limits the cost of the coolant and the damage a leak could do. Where the circuits are clean and closed, a compact sealed unit is common; where the facility side is less clean, a gasketed unit that can be opened is preferred.

Free Cooling And Heat Reuse

The same exchanger makes free cooling possible. When the outdoor air is cool enough, air-cooled dry coolers on the roof or in the yard cool a glycol circuit, and a plate exchanger passes that cooling to the facility water while the chillers rest. Because liquid cooling allows warmer water, the hours in which this works grow longer. In the other direction, the heat taken from the servers can be handed through a plate exchanger to a heating network, a neighbouring building or a process, turning waste heat into a product.

Designed For Continuous Operation

A data center does not stop, so the exchangers are planned with redundancy: units in parallel so one can be serviced, valves to isolate each one, strainers to protect the channels, and controls that keep the technology circuit within its limits whatever the facility side does. The choice of type, material and arrangement follows the fluids, the load and how much the site can tolerate a fault. TECS Engineering designs and delivers plate heat exchanger solutions for engine, power plant and industrial cooling circuits, and builds the dry coolers and radiators that release the heat to the air; send the load, the circuits and the site conditions and the engineering team will answer.

  • Often sits inside the coolant distribution unit
  • Compact, quick to react and close in temperature
  • With dry coolers it gives free cooling when the outdoor air allows
  • Passes server heat on for heating or process use

Questions We Are Often Asked

Why does a liquid-cooled data center need a plate heat exchanger?

To keep the clean coolant that reaches the servers separate from the building's larger water system, so dirt or corrosion products never reach the fine passages of the cold plates.

What is a coolant distribution unit?

The unit that serves the technology circuit with pumps, filters and controls; a plate heat exchanger inside it moves the heat to the facility water.

How does a plate exchanger help with free cooling?

It passes the cooling of an outdoor dry cooler circuit to the facility water, so the chillers can rest when the outdoor air is cool enough.

Can the heat from a data center be reused?

Yes. A plate exchanger can hand it to a heating network, a nearby building or a process.

How is a failure avoided?

With units in parallel, isolation valves, strainers and controls, so one exchanger can be serviced while the others keep the servers cooled.
