Radiators For Data Center Generators

Data center radiators

A data center keeps its generators for the hour nobody wants: a grid failure, perhaps on the hottest day of the year. In that hour every generator has to start, take load and run without overheating, often with dozens of sets running together and their radiators packed on a roof or in a narrow yard.

TECS builds remote and V-type radiators for data center generators, and radiators for liquid-cooled IT loads and free cooling. One of the largest data centers in Europe runs with 72 TECS radiators on its roof.

V-type radiators for a data center

Many Units, Little Space

Data center plots are expensive and generator yards are crowded. V-type radiators, with two inclined coils under a row of fans, carry high capacities on a small footprint and are often the answer on roofs. Where units stand close together, the air leaving one must not feed the next, so the arrangement is checked as a whole.

Backup generators run rarely but must be ready at any moment. The radiators are designed for the full load at the site's design ambient, not for the conditions of the monthly test run.

Neighbours And Sound

Many data centers are built close to homes and offices, and planning conditions often set sound limits for the generator plant, including the radiators. EC fans with speed control, the right fan size and the right number of fans keep the sound level down; the sound data of every unit comes with the offer.

The same radiators that cool the generators can be used for the IT load: with liquid-cooled racks and free cooling, a radiator rejects the heat directly to the air for much of the year and the chillers stay off.

Questions We Are Often Asked

Why do data center generators use remote radiators?

Generators in buildings, containers and crowded yards cannot take their cooling air from the engine room. A remote radiator stands outside, on a roof or a platform, and is designed for the full load at the site ambient.

What is a V-type radiator?

A radiator with two inclined coils under a common row of fans. It gives a large heat exchange surface on a small footprint, which suits data center roofs and yards.

Can the radiators meet planning sound limits?

The fans, their speed and their number are selected with the sound limit in mind, and the sound data of each unit is part of the offer.

Do you supply radiators for liquid cooling and free cooling?

Yes. TECS radiators reject heat from liquid-cooled IT loads and from chilled-water circuits in free-cooling mode.
