Oracle Trucks Gas To Data Centers While Pipelines Run Late

A pipeline that slips by a year does not have to stop a data center, if you are prepared to pay for gas by the truckload. Bloomberg reported on 8 October, citing people familiar with the work, that Oracle has been hauling compressed natural gas by road to data center sites in Utah and Texas to hold its construction schedules, and is weighing the same approach for the Project Jupiter campus in New Mexico, where the pipeline is late. Oracle did not answer Bloomberg's request for comment, but later posted on X praising its supplier VoltaGrid for finding cost-effective power so that customers get their cloud capacity on time.

Three Sites, Two Suppliers

In Utah, truck deliveries have kept a data center on the edge of Salt Lake City moving for more than a year while Oracle waited for a pipeline to be built and connected. Certarus, a unit of Superior Plus, supplies the gas there. In Texas, trucked gas fed the early work at the campus Vantage Data Centers is building in Shackelford County for Oracle and OpenAI; VoltaGrid is the supplier. According to Yahoo Finance, Vantage plans that Frontier campus at 1.4 GW and $25 billion, with the first building due in the second half of 2026.

New Mexico is the bigger problem. Project Jupiter in Doña Ana County is planned at 2.45 GW, and Oracle said in April that it would be powered by up to 2.45 GW of gas-fuelled Bloom Energy fuel cells in an on-site microgrid. The Green Chile pipeline that Energy Transfer is building to feed it, sized for up to 400 million cubic feet a day, was to start on 15 August 2026 and now targets 1 February 2027, after the State Land Office turned down the rights of way twice and a section had to be rerouted onto federal land. Oracle has sent the developer a force majeure notice seeking relief from payments if the campus misses its planned 2028 opening. Trucked gas would let the first phases run before the pipe is in service.

What A Virtual Pipeline Costs

The method itself is old. Gas is compressed into trailers at a filling station, driven to the site and let down to line pressure there; suppliers call it a virtual pipeline, and until now it mostly served mines and drilling sites far from any network. The numbers at data center scale are the new part. Jack Weixel of East Daley Analytics told Bloomberg that delivered compressed gas costs roughly four times the price at a major pipeline hub once labour, equipment and truck fuel are counted. Ellie Holbrook of SemiAnalysis estimated that at a 100 MW load (she stressed that this is not a stated Oracle figure) one large trailer would carry about 40 minutes of electricity, so even a small share of a campus would need dozens of deliveries a day.

Oracle's shares fell 5.5 % on the day of the report, which Transport Topics notes was the stock's worst day since July; the company's free cash flow stays negative until more of its AI data centers are finished.

Bridging Fuel, Permanent Plant

Read from the plant side, the story is about what the gas feeds, not how it arrives. The engines, turbines or fuel cells on these sites are permanent; the trailers are a bridge for a year or two until the pipeline is connected. Everything downstream of the gas skid (generation, switchgear, the heat rejection for the engines) is sized for the final campus and has to run properly in the bridging period as well, often at part load and in the middle of a construction site with dust and traffic around it.

That matters for the gas supply contract too. A trailer fleet is sized for a load; if the campus energises faster than planned, or the summer peak lands before the pipeline does, the supplier has to find trucks, drivers and filling capacity at short notice. It is one more way in which the timetable of the power supply, rather than the compute, now decides when a data center opens.
